Fellowship Description

The Corneal Fellowship at Legacy Health System’s Devers Eye Institute provides training in the diagnosis and treatment of cornea, anterior segment and external diseases beyond the standards of the General Ophthalmology residency. The Cornea Fellow will gain clinical experience at Devers Eye Institute through exposure to and management of a large number of cornea patients within a tertiary care, international referral practice.

The Cornea Fellow will work directly with Dr. Mark Terry each day, as well as with his Corneal Associate, Dr. Neda Shamie. The surgical exposure with the fellow as primary surgeon is extensive with over 250 corneal transplants a year (70% DSAEK), abundant cataract surgery, and extensive experience in the surgical procedures of anterior segment reconstructions, IOL complications and exchanges, anterior vitrectomy, iridoplasty, keratolimbal allografts, tumor excisions, amniotic membrane surgery, pterygium excisions with mitomycin C, and a host of other subspecialty therapies. The Fellow will also spend time with Dr. Brian Will at his Laser Vision Center learning state of the art refractive surgery on hundreds of patients.

Unique to the Corneal Fellowship at Devers is the extensive experience the Fellow will gain in new methods of corneal transplantation. These are areas of active clinical research in which the Fellow will be intimately involved. We currently have the largest (>700 cases) and longest running (> 8 years) prospective series of Endothelial Keratoplasty (DLEK, DSEK/DSAEK) surgery in the world with a plethora of prospective data. The Corneal Fellow will gain extensive hands-on experience in this and other new transplantation techniques. In addition to presentations at national and local scientific meetings, it is anticipated that the Fellow will be first author on at least two scientific publications and co-author on several others during his/her Fellowship year. In addition, the Fellow will have access and encouragement to pursue basic laboratory corneal projects through the Lions Vision Research Laboratory of Oregon.

The Corneal Fellowship at Devers Eye Institute with Dr. Mark Terry is a unique opportunity to have one-on-one subspecialty training with no significant resident competition for cases in a large, state of the art, tertiary care, surgical practice.
