Our DSEK/DSAEK course includes the following: (1) a hands-on DSEK wet lab using human cadaver eyes, (2) viewing of post-operative patients in Dr. Terry's practice and (3) and sitting in as a first assistant at the microscope during DSAEK surgeries. The total cost of the course is $3350, which includes payment for the use of a cadaver eye and wet lab ($850) and payment to Dr. Terry for the course ($2500). Of note, we only schedule 2 physicians for each course in order to allow for a more personalized, truly “hands-on” DSAEK experience.  In addition, all of our surgeries use pre-cut tissue from the Lions Eye Bank of Oregon. We also provide extensive study materials of videos on DVD (both edited and unedited surgeries), hard copy manuscript reprints of important articles, full powerpoint DSAEK lectures for your use, and electronic versions of our patient information packets and informed consent forms for DSAEK surgery which can easily be modified for your own DSAEK surgery programs. Some preliminary reading materials will be sent to you prior to your arrival to “jump start” your course.

For course dates that are on Tuesdays or Thursdays, the course begins at 8:30am at Devers Eye Institute. Please arrive at the second floor of Devers (1040 NW 22nd Avenue, Portland, OR; telephone: 503 413-6223) and check in at the front desk to ask them to have Dan Friend come out to show you to the lab.  During the morning, you will view videos, perform an extensive wet lab and also intermittently see post-op DSAEK patients in the clinic with Dr. Terry.  After morning clinic, Dr. Terry will bring you to lunch at the hospital and then up to the outpatient surgery center for DSAEK surgery starting at 1:00 pm. The surgery schedule is usually concluded at about 6:00 pm. There is extensive time for discussion and questions and answers during the surgery as well as in between cases. You are encouraged to stay overnight so that you may view these same patients in clinic the next morning from 9:00 am to 10:00 am for their first post-op day examination. You are free to return home or explore our wonderful city of Portland after about 10:30 am.

For course dates that are on Wednesdays, the course begins at 7:30 am at St. Vincent's Hospital. Typically, we arrange for either the Corneal Fellow, or Dr. Terry, to pick you up at your hotel and take you over to St. Vincent’s Hospital, about a 10 minute drive on city streets from Devers Eye Institute. On these Wednesdays, we perform surgery in the morning until about 1:00 or 2:00 pm.  In the afternoon, you will come back to Devers and perform your wet lab and also see other post-op DSAEK patients in the clinic.  You are again encouraged to stay the following morning to see the patients on whom you assisted for their one day post-op examination if possible.

We feel that the very personalized experience and one-on-one training that occurs with our DSAEK course allows you to feel comfortable in returning home to provide safe and effective DSAEK surgery for your very first patients. We also encourage you to keep in contact with us with any problems, concerns or just questions that you may have as you proceed with your DSAEK clinical program.
