Endothelial Keratoplasty

DLEK & DSEK Sutureless Corneal Transplant Surgery Techniques

DLEK-DSEK

Dr. Terry was the first surgeon in the United States to perform any form of endothelial keratoplasty (EK) corneal transplant surgery. He was the second surgeon in the world (after Dr. Melles of the Netherlands) to perform EK surgery and Dr. Terry originally developed the DLEK procedure.

It was in January of 1999 that Dr. Terry began perfecting EK surgery in his laboratory, and in 2000 he established a scientific prospective clinical trial of DLEK to ensure that this procedure would meet the highest ethical standards for patient care.

Since then, Dr. Terry has done nearly 800 EK procedures (known as DLEK or DSEK or DSAEK). He continues to have the largest prospective scientific study of this form of suture-less corneal transplant surgery in the world and with the longest follow-up. The DSEK procedure is a variation of the DLEK procedure in that it removes even less tissue from the patient and provides even faster visual rehabilitation. When a machine called a microkeratome is used to prepare the donor tissue, then the procedure is called “DSAEK”. DSAEK is the standard procedure used by Dr. Terry. The current DSAEK technique designed by Dr. Terry has the lowest dislocation rate (less than 2%) and graft failure rate (less than 1%) of any series reported in the world.

Due to the success of this procedure our staff has also increased.  In 2006, Dr. Terry brought Dr. Neda Shamie to his practice as his partner.  Dr. Shamie has expertise in the field of corneal and refractive surgery and has performed almost 100 EK transplants, with dislocation and graft failure rates equal to Dr. Terry's.  We have also added a corneal and research fellowship positions.  Our current corneal fellow is Dr. Paul M. Phillips and our research fellow is Dr. Hisham A. Hasby from Egypt.

This site was created to (1) provide educational information for patients, (2) inform interested physicians and surgeons on these innovative procedures and (3) provide information for residents and ophthalmologists seeking an AUPO certified Corneal Fellowship with Dr. Terry.  Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.
